EDGAR
Also known as: Electronic Data Gathering Analysis and Retrieval
DEFINITION
The Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system is the SEC's public filing database, online since 1993. Every periodic report (10-K, 10-Q, 8-K), insider filing (Form 4), ownership disclosure (13D, 13G, 13F), proxy statement, and registration statement is submitted via EDGAR and made publicly available — usually within minutes of acceptance.
WHY IT MATTERS FOR RETAIL INVESTORS
EDGAR is the source of truth for everything FilingRadar, Bloomberg, and analyst reports ultimately reference. The UI is famously dated, but the data is authoritative and free. Knowing how to search EDGAR directly (full-text search, company search, CIK lookup) is a skill that pays dividends — you can find filings that aggregators have not yet indexed, and you avoid relying on third parties that may have caching delays.
